What Is the Meaning of Betting on either Over / Under X Goals Being Scored?

Placing an over or under goals bet is a popular bet to place. With the name of it giving some away, you bet on there being either over or under a number of goals scored in a match by both the teams playing during regular time.

To give an example, you can place a bet on there being over 0.5 goals scored in the match. This means that your bet will win if there are more than 0.5 goals scored in the specified match. As there can’t be “0.5” goals scored in a match, you are betting on there being at least one goal scored. The only way you will lose this bet is if no goals are scored during the match. Extra time and penalty shoot out goals do not count but regular penalties do. As betting on over/under 0.5 goals is a popular market, we’ve written a dedicated blog about it.

The above example is not exhaustive of the bets you place around over/under goals. Below we’ll go through the range of bets you can place with meaning, examples and tips regarding the different bets you can place on over/under goals.

Over/Under 1.5 Goals Meaning, Example and Strategy

Placing a bet on over or under 1.5 goals means you are predicting that there will either be more than 1.5 goals scored or less than 1.5 goals scored in a match by either team. In short, there will be 2 goals or more.

If you bet on there being over 1.5 goals and the match ends 1-1, you’ll win as there are more than 1.5 goals scored in the match. Conversely, if you bet on there being under 1.5 goals, with the same result as above, you would lose your bet.

When Should You Place an Over or Under 1.5 Goals Bet?

With over 70% of matches finishing with 2 goals or more, it’s not typically a punt. Although, this number varies from league to league and team to team.

If there’s a derby, such as the famous North London Derby, you could be inclined to bet that there will be over 1.5 goals scored.

Derbies tend to be filled with emotions. On top of the potential 3 points, there’s pride at stake. The fans and the history of a club increase the stakes and the matches are often more open than regular match ups. More open matches means more chances of goals.

Overall, the odds are not always the strongest in the over/under 1.5 goals market so finding a strong bet is not always easy.

Over/Under 2.5 Goals Meaning, Example and Strategy

Like the other over/under goals bets, you’re betting there being either more or less than 2.5 goals during regular play in a match. If you bet over, there has to be 3 or more goals. If you bet under, there has to be less than 3 goals.

As there being more or less than 2.5 goals in a match is quite a middling bet it varies a lot match to match depending on the teams playing. More so than if you’re betting on over / under 0.5 goals.

When Should You Place an Over or Under 2.5 Goals Bet?

Betting on there being more or less than 2.5 goals falls in the middle of the difficulty Vs reward trade off for over / under goals. Last season in the English Premier League there was an average of 2.7 goals per game. This fair balance means that the over / under 2.5 goals market hovers around evens or just under.

When a betting market hovers around evens it means there’s value to be found with the right information. However, it’s quite the challenge to gather this information yourself. Over / Under 3.5 Goals Meaning, Examples and Strategy

The meaning of betting on over 3.5 goals being scored in a match means you want there to be 4 or more goals scored in the match. Conversely, if you bet on there being under 3.5 goals, you’re hoping there are less than 4 goals scored in total in a match.

For each way you can go, the parameters for this bet are pretty straightforward. A match to have 4 or more goals within regular time means that it is a high scoring affair. This can occur when you have a team that is dominant and prolific at scoring vs a team that is battling relegation. Under 4 goals is a relatively standard score.

When Should You Place an Over / Under 3.5 Goals Bet?

This will make for a relatively mundane and safe bet but when put into an accumulator, there’s more of a chance to win big. On the other side of the coin, betting on there being more (over) 3.5 goals is setting yourself for potentially a lot of fun. The odds will be higher as it is typically less likely to have 4 or more goals in a match. So not only will your returns be higher but you’ll also have the pleasure of watching a match full of goals.
